"We flew in on the day before the funeral and went to my mother's home. You cannot imagine my shock at what I saw. The entire house had been stripped of every picture, -- even the rocking chair. I haven't spoken to my brothers and sisters since.
Why does this happen?
After all, there probably was a will, estate plan or trust already in place.
It happens because someone was afraid that a cherished link to the person they love will be gone forever.
The money is one thing. Family Legacy is about another. Family Legacy is about the precious connections between one generation and another. "We all want to see our lives as part of a larger picture that extends beyond our lifetime to future generations."
But sadly, this process of Family Legacy transfer often does not take place peacefully because family members never find the "right time" or the "right place" to talk with each other about what's important:
- Family treasures, such as the rocking chair or the family business
- How to honor and celebrate the value of a lifetime
- Assets being passed on with consideration of each child's unique relationship to the family
